The Dough Before the Fast: Celebrating Fasnacht Day
Fasnacht Day rolls around every year on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, and in 2025, we’re marking it on February 17. Rooted in German tradition and lovingly embraced by Pennsylvania Dutch communities, this day celebrates a delicious custom: indulging in fried doughnuts before the Lenten fast.
The word “Fasnacht” literally means “night before the fast,” and the practice has deep religious and cultural roots. Before giving up indulgences for Lent, people would clear their pantries of rich ingredients like sugar, butter, eggs, and lard—by turning them into one last sweet treat.
A Bit of Fasnacht History
Fasnacht Day has its origins in pre-Lenten traditions in Germany and Switzerland, similar to Mardi Gras and Shrove Tuesday in other parts of the world. When German immigrants brought the tradition to the U.S., it became a unique celebration particularly cherished in Pennsylvania.
Over time, the pastries—fasnachts, fastnachts, or faschnachts (pick your spelling!)—became a seasonal staple in communities where heritage and hearty eating go hand in hand.
What Makes a Fasnacht Different?
While they look like doughnuts, fasnachts are:
- Less sweet than traditional donuts
- Usually square or rectangular
- Made with potato dough or yeast dough
- Often unfrosted, but dusted with powdered sugar or cinnamon
They can be cut, filled, or left whole—and every bakery has its own take.
How to Celebrate Fasnacht Day
- Eat Like It’s Your Last Meal (Before Lent): Grab a traditional fasnacht or make a batch at home.
- Try Regional Variations: Compare fasnachts from different local bakeries—some might even offer gluten-free or vegan takes.
- Share the History: Many people don’t realize this is more than just a donut day!
- Post Your Pastries: Show off your favorite Fasnacht flavor or family recipe with #FasnachtDay.
